Welcome to the Kansas CCWIS Project

Modernizing the Kansas Child Welfare Information System

The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) has begun a journey to modernize its child welfare technology with a new information system called CCWIS, short for Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System. Many states are pursuing CCWIS projects with support and funding provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families.

Over the next several years, Kansas will replace multiple information systems with one modern system that complies with federal guidance, eliminates duplication of work, and standardizes business practices and service delivery statewide.

“This project has the potential to drastically change the way our programs operate and positively impact the lives of some of our most vulnerable populations in the state,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “A modern and adaptable information technology infrastructure system will help our employees and partners seamlessly work together to better serve Kansans.”

What Will CCWIS Do?
CCWIS will help DCF become more efficient, economical, and effective in protecting children, strengthening families, and connecting them to necessary resources by:

Providing DCF staff and child and family service partners like our schools, courts and providers with more accurate and timely information
Helping DCF and provider staff to spend less time on paperwork and more time helping children, youth and families
Replacing multiple older systems, reducing redundancies and standardizing practices

Project Timeline
CCWIS project execution began in November 2025. It is expected to take about three years to get the system ready for launch. This timeline is typical for technology projects of this size and complexity and will help ensure the new system is carefully planned, built, and tested to meet the needs of Kansas children and families.
