Newsroom Larned State Hospital Acts on Inspection Report

The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have reached an agreement on a plan of correction for Larned State Hospital (LSH). The plan of correction is in response to an unannounced inspection of LSH conducted by KDHE April 3rd-5th. A previous inspection was conducted in November 2006.

KDHE submitted an initial inspection report to LSH on April 17th and a final report on May 9th. In response, LSH submitted a plan of correction on May 18th, detailing corrections to be completed or in many cases already made.

Upon receiving the inspection report, LSH officials promptly set about rectifying the problems noted. Many deficiencies were immediately resolved. For items related to infrastructure and capital improvements, detailed plans of correction were developed. All projects are currently on schedule for completion. (see attached)

A letter from KDHE dated June 8th indicated the plan of correction had been accepted: “You have provided the Bureau with an acceptable plan of correction that should resolve citations issued.” The plan of correction was also accepted by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).

Since the first inspection in November, LSH has implemented an aggressive maintenance plan which includes a monthly safety tour by the Director of Safety and Environment.

In addition to performing responsive and preventative maintenance, increased monitoring and documentation are occurring. “Larned State Hospital is dedicated to maintaining a safe environment for patients,” said Superintendent Mark Schutter. “Staff have stepped up to implement necessary improvements and processes.”
